How the IFTA tax calculator works

  1. Enter miles per state — these are the miles your truck drove inside each jurisdiction during the quarter, regardless of where you bought fuel.
  2. Enter gallons purchased per state — the gallons you actually bought (and paid fuel tax on) inside each jurisdiction.
  3. We compute fleet MPG by dividing your total miles by your total gallons.
  4. Taxable gallons per state = miles in that state ÷ fleet MPG. This is the fuel you "consumed" in that state.
  5. Tax due per state = (taxable gallons − gallons purchased there) × that state's IFTA rate. A negative number is a refund/credit owed back to you.
  6. Net tax due is the sum across all states. That's what you owe on your IFTA return for the quarter.

What if my state is missing?

Only the 48 contiguous U.S. states are IFTA jurisdictions. Alaska and Hawaii are not IFTA members — they use their own state fuel-tax filings. The 10 Canadian provinces (AB, BC, MB, NB, NL, NS, ON, PE, QC, SK) are also IFTA jurisdictions but aren't shown here yet.

How accurate are these rates?

Diesel IFTA rates are refreshed automatically each time you open this calculator (at most once per day) and reflect the latest published quarter. Rates shown above are what's currently in our database — always cross-check before filing your return.

IFTA calculator — FAQ

How do I calculate IFTA for my trucking company?
Record total miles driven and fuel purchased in each IFTA jurisdiction for the quarter. This free calculator applies the current per-state diesel tax rate to your miles and fuel, then computes the net tax owed or credited per jurisdiction — for every U.S. jurisdiction you operated in.
Is this IFTA calculator free, and do I need an account?
Yes — it's completely free and needs no login. Calculate per-state miles from a trip's origin and destination, then compute the tax due for each jurisdiction, no account required.
Are the IFTA tax rates current?
The calculator uses the latest published quarterly diesel rates, refreshed automatically (at most once per day) from the official IFTA source. Always cross-check before filing — jurisdictions can update mid-cycle.
Does this calculator file my IFTA return for me?
No. It calculates the tax owed per jurisdiction so your numbers are ready to file; you submit them to your base jurisdiction. A MyCarrierVault account lets you track miles and fuel across the quarter so the calculation is ready at filing time.
Why is Oregon's IFTA rate shown as zero?
Oregon doesn't levy a fuel tax under IFTA — it uses a weight-mile tax instead. The calculator locks Oregon at $0.00 so it doesn't double-count tax you pay through Oregon's separate weight-mile system.
